I just purchased a Rockwell horizontal mill, model number 21-120. It is about 425 miles away and was thinking about hauling the thing home myself. I need to weigh the options and get advice on how to set up the machine for transport. First thing the buyer says it weighs 500 lbs, does that sound about right?

Selling the horizontal right now. The vertical was OK machine but the head has no "nod", you can't tram it in if it's not machined square, and the one at the U wasn't square. If I was looking to buy the Rockwell I would want to check that.

Using the overarm with the horizontal spindle essentially wipes out the advantage of the vertical spindle, (i.e., switching the arm back and forth is a royal pita.) But, nothing stopping you from using end mill holders, etc, on the horizontal.

Overview of the mill. I recently acquired this Rockwell 21-122 Horizontal/Vertical milling machine from my local Craigslist. It's in remarkably good shape; most of the moving parts are free, the ways look very clean, the table surface is relatively free from dings and not a whole of obvious rust. The quill doesn't have full travel though.

Mine is in excellent condition, the motor was shot, so I built a lay shaft transmission, increasing the 6 speeds to a now current 24 speeds (85 to 6500 rpms). I mainly use the mill with a ER 32 x R8 collet chuck. As this is the 4 milling machine in the shop, it's currently only used for small jobs, (key ways, etc)
